Thanks!

Many thanks to all the faithful of Saint Charles Borromeo parish for embracing the revised English Missal. As the Masses progressed this past Saturday and Sunday the responses became louder and seemed to be prayed with strength and conviction. Please continue to use the cards available in the pews or your missals and missalettes as we journey through the liturgical year.

“And with your spirit.”

Be ready for the First Sunday of Advent with the revised English responses!

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.

CONFITEOR I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

CREDO I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PREFACE DIALOGUE

Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just.

SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.  Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.

The Solemnity of Christ the King

The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man’s thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ’s royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations.

Today’s Mass establishes the titles for Christ’s royalty over men: 1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things; “All things were created by Him”; 2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood, and made us His property and possession; 3) Christ is Head of the Church, “holding in all things the primacy”; 4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion.

Today we describe the qualities of Christ’s kingdom. This kingdom is: 1) supreme, extending not only to all people but also to their princes and kings; 2) universal, extending to all nations and to all places; 3) eternal, for “The Lord shall sit a King forever”; 4) spiritual, Christ’s “kingdom is not of this world”.

Reception of Holy Communion

Today, on this great universal feast I would like to address an important issue regarding the fullest expression of our Catholic faith — the reception of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Communion.

During the course of the last several months there have been abuses of the Sacrament here at St. Charles Borromeo which might be considered scandalous and which may be sacrilegious.

One case in point: At a recent funeral a young woman received the Sacred Host, walked back to her pew, and was found to have placed It in a tissue. She was instructed then and there (by the altar server whom I had sent to investigate) to consume the Host. … I find this shocking and disturbing.

Another instance: At the side aisle, a man was seen breaking the Sacred Host and giving It to his young son.

These are just two occasions which were witnessed here in our midst. This begs the question, “What has happened to our teaching and understanding of the Sacred Body of the Lord given to us in the Eucharist?” The answer, I believe, is that the catechesis on the Most Blessed Sacrament has been lacking. It has been either deficient or completely absent.

In March 2004 the Holy See addressed certain liturgical abuses in the document Redemptionis Sacramentum – The Sacrament of Redemption.

Paragraph 92 says: … special care should be taken to ensure that the host is consumed by the communicant in the presence of the minister, so that no one goes away carrying the Eucharistic species in his hand. If there is a risk of profanation, then Holy Communion should not be given in the hand to the faithful.

Paragraph 94 states: It is not licit for the faithful “to take . . . by themselves . . . and, still less, to hand . . . from one to another” the sacred host or the sacred chalice.

Do not “pluck” the Host out of the minister’s hand. Allow the Host to be placed in the palm of your hand. If you receive on the tongue, it is alright to stick your tongue out. Don’t just open your mouth. Do not say “Amen” after you have received the Host in your mouth.

In paragraph 107 we read: In accordance with what is laid down by the canons, “one who throws away the consecrated species or takes them away or keeps them for a sacrilegious purpose, incurs a latae sententiae (automatic) excommunication.

One is not to approach the Altar unless having been thoroughly educated and properly disposed to receive the Lord in this awesome and mysterious way.

Here at St. Charles Borromeo our children receive two years preparation for the Sacrament of Penance, and three years of preparation for Confirmation and Communion; our teens and adults receive a minimum of nine months preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation. Receiving any Sacrament without preparation is simply wrong. Exceptions of course may be made for people with diminished abilities.

Protection of the Sacred Species

Most of us in Church this morning are “cradle Catholics” having been brought up in the Faith from birth guided by family, some of us are converts to the Faith having been guided by the Spirit. All of us must approach the Altar of God with a reverential fear, that is to say — a deep-seated recognition of the Almighty power of God and an understanding of our own unworthiness. Together, we protect the Sacred Species from sacrilege and profanation.

In paragraph183 of Redemptionis Sacramentum we read: In an altogether particular manner, let everyone do all that is in their power to ensure that the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist will be protected from any and every irreverence or distortion and that all abuses be thoroughly corrected. This is a most serious duty incumbent upon each and every one, and all are bound to carry it out without any favoritism.

I have begun documenting abuses and will be communicating them to Rome to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments with copies to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Divine Worship and the Diocese of Phoenix Office of Liturgy so that they may be made aware.

Beginning next week, the First Sunday of Advent, we will be receiving Holy Communion in a slightly different fashion. Currently we have two “stations” for reception of the Sacred Host. The assembly approaches the priest, deacon or minister, stands or kneels, and receives either on the tongue or in the hand. Next Sunday we will have 10 “stations” you may stand or kneel at each kneeler, and receive either on the tongue or in the hand (your option) as the minister of Communion approaches you. Please consume the host immediately. Do not walk away prior to communicating. We have been distributing Communion this way during weekday Masses for several weeks.

Communion Under Both Species

Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix, Arizona, has issued new norms for the distribution of Communion under both species. He has given each Pastor the faculty to determine instances where the Body and the Blood of Christ may be shared.

In the new norms, released to priests on November 7, Bishop Olmsted makes it clear that his intent is to bring practices in Phoenix into line with the Vatican policies set forth in the General Instruction for the Roman Missal.

Under the new norms, Communion under both species is allowed for special occasions and on other occasions when the pastor is satisfied that certain conditions have been fulfilled. Those conditions include a proper instruction of the faith in receiving the Blood of Christ, a manageable number of people receiving Communion, no special concerns about communicable diseases, and an assurance that the Blood of Christ will not be profaned.

Here at St. Charles Borromeo parish after you receive the Sacred Host you may approach, if you wish, a Minister of Holy Communion for reception of the Precious Blood. In doing so, you are acknowledging Jesus’ complete presence in either the Consecrated Host and/or the Consecrated Wine. I am assured you understand one does not receive less of Jesus in one species alone.

Conclusion

Today, with this instruction, I am satisfied that the faithful of St. Charles Borromeo parish will guard the Most Holy Sacrament with their lives.

In the words of Pope Benedict XVI: Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may the Holy Spirit kindle within us the same ardor experienced by the disciples on the way to Emmaus and renew our “eucharistic wonder” through the splendor and beauty radiating from the liturgical rite, the efficacious sign of the infinite beauty of the holy mystery of God. Those disciples arose and returned in haste to Jerusalem in order to share their joy with their brothers and sisters in the faith. True joy is found in recognizing that the Lord is still with us, our faithful companion along the way. The Eucharist makes us discover that Christ, risen from the dead, is our contemporary in the mystery of the Church, his body. Of this mystery of love we have become witnesses. Let us encourage one another to walk joyfully, our hearts filled with wonder, towards our encounter with the Holy Eucharist, so that we may experience and proclaim to others the truth of the words with which Jesus took leave of his disciples: “Lo, I am with you always, until the end of the world”. – Sacramentum Caritatis, February 22, 2007

This is Christ our King.

— Sacramentum Caritatis 22 febrero 2007

Este es Cristo nuestro Rey.
