I’ll carry it for You

This is a true story of a young woman who was invited to go rock climbing:

Although she was very scared, she went with her group to a tremendous granite cliff. In spite of her fear, she put on the gear, took hold of the rope, and started up the face of that rock.

Well, she got to a ledge where she could take a breather. As she was hanging on there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens. Well, here she is, on a rock ledge, with hundreds of feet below her and hundreds of feet above her. Of course, she looked and looked and looked, hoping it had landed on the ledge, but it just wasn’t there. Here she was, far from home, her sight now blurry. She was desperate and began to get upset, so she prayed to the Lord to help her to find it. When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but there was no contact lens to be found. She sat down, despondent, with the rest of the party, waiting for the rest of them to make it up the face of the cliff. She looked out across range after range of mountains, thinking of that verse that says, “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth.” She thought, “Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me.”

Finally, they walked down the trail to the bottom. At the bottom there was a new party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, “Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?” Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across the face of the rock, carrying it on its back. Well, her father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a picture of an ant lugging that contact lens with the words, “Lord, I don’t know why You want me to carry this thing. I can’t eat it, and it’s awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I’ll carry it for You.”

I think it would probably do some of us good to occasionally say, “God, I don’t know why you want me to carry this load. I can see no good in it and it’s awfully heavy. But, if you want me to carry it, I will.” God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

SVDP needs our help

It’s almost time for our annual Children’s Christmas Party. This year it is scheduled for December 15th and we are expecting to serve 40-50 children.

Of course it would not be a “Christmas Party” with out your generous help. We are in need of certain items for this year’s Children’s Christmas Party to be a great success. We hope that you can help us out by donating any of the items listed:

wrapping paper, small stuffed animals, scotch tape, bags of hard candies, ribbons/bows, bags of soft candies, gift bags, a filled piñata, gift boxes

Donations can be made at the church office now through December 12th. Thank you in advance for your help and God bless you.

"Ad orientem"

The Traditional Latin Mass is celebrated every Friday morning at 8:15 a.m. This Mass is celebrated “ad orientem.” This is the ancient posture of prayer of the entire Catholic community—clergy and laity alike. The priest leads the people toward the Heavenly Jerusalem. Everyone stands at the Foot of the Cross adoring Jesus Christ the Holy Victim of our sins.

This manner of celebrating the Holy Mass puts into word and practice a vertical theology; one which directs our attention up to God rather than participating in a seemingly human dialogue on a horizontal level between minister and people. It is an offering up to the Father by all His faithful people.

This being said, the 9:00 a.m. English Mass and any Funeral Mass celebrated on a Friday will be celebrated ad orientem.

We are what we believe, and we believe what we are; creatures of God made in His image praising Him, loving Him and honoring Him for all time and eternity; here on earth, and in heaven.

For All the Saints Who From Their Labors Rest

The Solemnity of All Saints is a Holy Day of Obligation. St. Charles Borromeo Parish will celebrate Mass at 9:00 a.m.& 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 1. The Feast of All Souls will be celebrated on November 2 at 8:15 a.m. with a Traditional Latin Requiem Mass, and at 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. A Menudo Dinner will follow the evening Mass to kick-off FESTIVAL’07.

FIESTA PARROQUIAL – NOVIEMBRE 2,3, Y 4 Estamos pidiendo ayuda de la comunidad para la fiesta anual cuando celebramos a nuestro santo patrón San Carlos Borromeo. Tendremos puestos de comida variada para diferentes gustos y apetitos. Estamos pidiendo voluntarios para dar servicio en los diferentes puestos. La fiesta dará comienzo el viernes a las 8:00 con una cena de Menudo tortilla y refresco. El sábado daremos comienzo con una misa a las 12:00 PM en honor a nuestro santo patrón y bendición de los puestos; la celebración continuará asta las diez de la noche. El domingo la celebración dará comienzo a las 9:00 AM después de misa y continuaremos asta las 9:00 PM .

The Origins of Hallowe’en

The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the new year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead—including ghosts, goblins and witches—returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires.

When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider—traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Even or “holy evening.” Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day

Devotion to Mary

It is a long-established custom of the Church to sing a Marian hymn or antiphon at the Offertory of the Mass; never-the-less it is not a requirement. Marian hymns and antiphons are a noble Catholic practice, since our Blessed Mother draws us closer to her Son.
